Seven Hills West vineyard is located just on the Oregon side of the border in the Walla Walla AVA. This is a former apple orchard site and the soil type is basalt cobblestone. Nicknamed “The Rocks”, these cobbles lie on an old outwash plain of the Walla Walla River. The vines are oriented on a North-South axis at an elevation of 950 feet.
The valley location creates optimal growing conditions. Rounded rocks allow drainage and absorb heat throughout the season. Day to night temperature cycling is influenced by the warm temperatures of the region and the cooling features of the Columbia River Basin. Vertical shoot positioning of the vines maximizes sun exposure
We have been fortunate through our association with Grande Ronde Cellars to have access to a 2.5 acre block of Cabernet Sauvignon planted in the early 80’s. Usual yields here are right at 2 tons/acre. Grande Ronde has been sourcing this fruit since 1997 and has a long track record for producing highly regarded Cabernet Sauvignon from the vineyard. Seven Hills West is owned by the Premier Partners group and is managed by Tom Waliser.
These grapes make up the backbone of our flagship Walla Walla Valley Cabernet Sauvignon produced since 2005. They typically exhibit elegant dark berry characteristics balanced by soft but firm tannins and gentle acidity. Immediately drinkable they shine after 5 to 7 years of cellaring.
