XL vineyard is located in the up and coming new hillside vineyard area called SeVein. It is just to the south of Seven Hills Vineyard in the Walla Walla AVA. Planted in 2007, it encompasses 47 acres, planted on a north facing slope, at an elevation of 1200 feet. The vineyard is owned by John Rempel, and managed by Chris Banek.
In contrast to the usual silt loam soil type found throughout most Walla Walla vineyards, here a more stony loam punctuates the basalt underlayments. Windblown loess drapes the basalt ridgelines at the higher elevations. This along with the steep slopes accentuates air and water drainage.
This is our second year of sourcing Cabernet Franc from this promising vineyard. Although the vines are relatively young, they provide a nice fruit character to the wine and show a complexity that makes us excited for the future.
